The AN/VRC-106 is the primary wireless access point and repeater for the U.S. military Secure Wireless Land Area Network (SWLAN). It uses off-the-shelf industry wireless local area network technology to communicate among the vehicles of a Tactical Operations Center and a Network Operations Center.

SWLAN provides secure wireless Ethernet communications between Tactical Operational Center (TOC) vehicles at a minimum rate of 5 Mbps up to 1 km LOS. The SWLAN resides in Network Operations Center-Vehicle (NOC-V), TOCs (S-832, S-842, S-842A Shelters) and Command Post Platforms (e.g., M1130 command vehicle of a Stryker Brigade Combat Team) and operates in the 2.4–2.473 GHz and 4.4-4.5 GHz bands.
