'''Welcome, new editor!'''  We're very glad you've joined us.  Here are pointers for a [[CZ:Quick Start|quick start]]. Also, when you get a chance, please read [[CZ:The Editor Role|The Editor Role]].  You can look at [[CZ:Getting Started|Getting Started]] for other helpful introductory pages.  It is essential for you as an editor to join [https://lists.purdue.edu/mailman/listinfo/citizendium-editors the Citizendium-Editors (broadcast) mailing list] in order to stay abreast of editor-related issues, as well as the [[CZ:Mailing lists|mailing list(s)]] that concern your particular interests. It is also important, for project-wide matters, to join [https://lists.purdue.edu/mailman/listinfo/citizendium-l the Citizendium-L (broadcast) mailing list].  You can test out [[CZ:How to edit an article|editing]] in the [[CZ:Sandbox|sandbox]] if you'd like. If you need help to get going, the [http://forum.citizendium.org/ forums] is one option. That's also where we discuss policy and proposals.  You can ask any [[:Category:CZ Constables|constable]] for help, too. Me, for instance!  Just put a note on their "talk" page. Again, welcome and thank youWe appreciate your willingness to share your expertise, and we hope to see your edits on [[Special:Recentchanges|Recent changes]] soon. ==The CZ approach==
John, welcome to CZ! I just made some changes (and comments on the Talk page) for [[Social movement]]. Just a couple of things to suggest, as this is not WP and the CZ approach is not so easy to grasp immediately. First, it's better not to delete stuff unless you're really clear that it's wrong or irrelevant. This is not because we want to get stupidly long articles like WP, but we do need to consider alternative views and theories. Second, if you do decide to delete stuff, better to explain it on the Talk page. If you want to delete large amounts of stuff, discuss it first (if anyone is around to talk about it). And third, some articles are rather conceptual and theoretically based (like social movement), really requiring a lot of input and some expert oversight. This type of article is a tough nut to crack. Don't be afraid to start them, but equally don't be shocked if people argue, radically change or (as editors) occasionally over-rule you. We try to interfere politely though :-) Thanks, [[User:Martin Baldwin-Edwards|Martin Baldwin-Edwards]] 01:21, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

== Welcome ==
:Thanks, Martin. I certainly take your point that the "CZ approach is not so easy to grasp immediately". I've been doing what I consider to be some fairly straightforward editing, but have found that it has generated an incredible amount of Talk page discussion. As you say, everyone is being very polite, but I have been slightly overwhelmed and a bit discouraged at times, and am more reluctant to "be bold" now. [[User:John Foster|John Foster]] 20:57, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

John, please note that the bottom of your user page has tags to the effect that you are a User and Editor in the Physics and the Geography Workgroups. As we have already discussed via email, you are free to add addition User tags for any other Workgroups that you desire. Simply go to the Edit page of your User page and add additional tags like those for Physics and Geography.
== Added an Archive box to your talk page ==

Please read the above blue bar "Talk Page Etiquette" and sign your comments and/or responses as indicated, namely by simply typing [[User:Milton Beychok|Milton Beychok]] 15:53, 11 May 2010 (UTC) (4 tildes).
Hi John, I noticed that you were cleaning up your talk page and thought I'd make you an archive box.  If you ever want to get rid of clutter, just cut, click on the Archive 1, and paste.  You can make your own Archive 2, but don't worry about that until your ready and I will help you do it next time.

Have fun! [[User:Milton Beychok|Milton Beychok]] 15:53, 11 May 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for all your doing around here. I see about 4 new articles that look good.  Looking forward to more! [[User:D. Matt Innis|D. Matt Innis]] 02:31, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

::John, I noted that you trimmed your User page. It would be nice if you expanded it a bit ... at least what country you are in, your education and what you are interested in. After all, the User page is your introduction to people with whom you will be collaborating.
==Returning to Citizendium: an update on the project and how to get involved==
Hello - some time ago you became part of the Citizendium project, but we haven't seen you around for a while. Perhaps you'd like to update your [[User:John Foster|public biography]] or check on the progress of [http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/John_Foster any pages you've edited so far].

::Just to let you know, if you would prefer a different "look" for the Citizendium pages, there are number of "skins" (i.e., choices on how the pages look). Click on the "Preferences" at the top of this page (or any other page), then click on "skin" and you will find 9 choices, each of which you can preview before making a selection. My favorite is "Monobook". Whatever you select, can always be changed later, if you wish. [[User:Milton Beychok|Milton Beychok]] 21:23, 11 May 2010 (UTC)
Citizendium now has over [[:Category:CZ Live|16,000 articles]], with more than [[:Category:Approved Articles|150 approved]] by specialist [[CZ:The Editor Role|Editors]] such as yourself, but our contributor numbers require a boost. We have an initiative called '[[CZ:Eduzendium|Eduzendium]]' that brings in students enrolled on university courses to write articles for credit, but we still need more Editors across the community to write, discuss and approve material. There are some developed [[:Category:Geography_Developed_Articles|Geography]] and [[:Category:Physics_Developed_Articles|Physics]] articles that could be improved and approved, and some high-priority [[CZ:Core Articles/Natural Sciences|Natural]] and [[CZ:Core Articles/Social Sciences|Social Sciences]] articles that we don't have yet. You can also create new articles via [[CZ:Start_Article|this guide]], and contribute to some Geography or Physics pages that have been recently edited [http://en.citizendium.org/wiki?title=Special:RecentChangesLinked&target=Category%3AGeography_tag here] and [http://en.citizendium.org/wiki?title=Special:RecentChangesLinked&target=Category%3APhysics_tag here] - or to [http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/Special:RecentChanges any others] on Citizendium, since you're a general [[CZ:The Author Role|Author]] as well as a specialist Editor. You may like to contribute to discussions in the [http://forum.citizendium.org forums], and might consider running for an elected position on the [[CZ:Management Council|Management]] and [http://ec.citizendium.org Editorial] Councils that oversee the project.

::One more thing, if you would like a private "sandbox" in which to practice writing articles or in which to draft articles, let me know and I will fix you up with one. [[User:Milton Beychok|Milton Beychok]] 21:26, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

== Some ideas for contributions ==

Hi John,
welcome aboard CZ. Milton and Hayford have already given you some hints as to how things work here in general, and I wish to add some more practical suggestions on what possibilities you have to contribute. For a start, I just took some of the keywords from the information you supplied upon registration, and display below the current state of related CZ articles (for icon documentation, see [[Template:Rpl/Doc]]):

{{rpr|Physics}}
{{rpr|Energy (science)}}
{{rpr|Energy policy}}
{{rpr|Environment}}
{{rpr|Environmental policy}}
{{rpr|Carl Jung}}
{{rpr|Psychology}}
{{rpr|Personality}}
{{rpr|Personality type}}
{{rpr|Postdoc}}
{{rpr|Doctoral thesis}}
{{rpr|Solar energy}}
{{rpr|Science}}
{{rpr|Technology}}
{{rpr|Society}}

In order to find articles dealing with similar topics, it's also worth looking at the [[:Category:Related Article Subpages|Related Article]] [[CZ:Subpages|subpages]] of such an article (or the [r]).

Furthermore, in case you are involved in homework assignments, please consider doing so via [[CZ:Eduzendium|Eduzendium articles]].

Finally, you can help future newcomers by giving your feedback on the above suggestions. To do so, please leave a note on [[User talk:Daniel Mietchen|my talk page]].

Looking forward to fruitful collaborative editing, --[[User:Daniel Mietchen|Daniel Mietchen]] 22:14, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

== Rocky Mountain Institute ==

Welcome, John!

You'll see I started an article on [[Rocky Mountain Institute]]. While there's very little in the article page proper, note the [[Rocky Mountain Institute/Related Articles]] page, where I'm playing some shortcuts to get the Board members into our system. Once the name is connected, we can start seeing people's social networks, which at the national organization board level, tends to be informative. We don't have real tools as yet in this area, but, for example, you can trace back a [[Council on Foreign Relations]] member to see who she knows... [[User:Howard C. Berkowitz|Howard C. Berkowitz]] 22:16, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

== Very good start by you!! ==

John, you've made a very good start by initiating two article in your first day at CZ!! It appears obvious to me (but I may be wrong) that you have contributed at Wikipedia at some time. Be that as it may, one of the primary differences between us and Wikipedia is that a CZ article is accompanied by  five or more auxiliary "subpages" and the article plus the subpages is called a "cluster".

All of the cluster pages '''must have as their topmost line this template: <nowiki>{{subpages}}</nowiki>'''. That holds true for the main article page and five default subpages, namely the "Talk subpage", the "Definition" subpage, the "Related Articles" subpage (meaning related CZ articles that takes the place of Wikipedia's "See also" list), the "Bibliography" subpage, and the "External Links" subpage. The Definition subpage must also include the transclusion tags around subpages template, thus: '''<nowiki><noinclude>{{Subpages}}</noinclude></nowiki>'''. The reasons for these points will become clear after you've been here a while. The '''Talk and definition subpages must be created when you create a new article'''. The other subpages can wait until you have the time or someone else creates them.

There is also a '''Metadata template that must be filled out when a new article is created'''. That is very important! You will be prompted to fill it in whenever you start a new article. Just click where prompted to do so and then fill in these items:

*pagename = Renewable energy (for example)
*abc = Renewable energy ... or Energy, renewable (if you would like it alphabetized in that manner in article lists)
*Variant = AE for American English or AU for Australian English or BE for British English
*cat check = yes or no (do you want someone to check your selection of categories?
*Status = External (import from WP without any revisions or improvements, lowest status) or 3 (a stub) or 2 (a developing article or 1 (a developed article ready to be nominated for being an Approved article)
*cat1= Select an appropriate Workgroup category, such as Engineering
*cat2= Select another appropriate category
*cat3= Select another appropriate category (Three categories are maximum)
The click on "Save".

That completes my short course on how to create a new article cluster. Note that Howard Berkowitz added subpages and the Metadata template for [[Amory Lovins]] and I did the same for [[Renewable energy]], for which I selected Engineering and Physics as categories. If you want to change those or add another, access the Metatdata template from  the link in the blue subpage banner at the top of the Talk page. It would be a good idea for you to look at the Edit screens of the Metadata templates created by Howard and by me to see if you agree with our choices.

I know this is a big mouthful, but I hope it is helpful. Don't worry about making mistakes, we all did when we were new to CZ. [[User:Milton Beychok|Milton Beychok]] 00:12, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

:Many thanks for your help and guidance. [[User:John Foster|John Foster]] 02:24, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

== Created a sandbox for you as requested ==

John, the link to your sandbox is on your user page, upper left. You can have more than one, if you so desire. [[User:Milton Beychok|Milton Beychok]] 19:39, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

:I just briefly scanned the article you ported from WP into your sandbox. Since I have more familiarity with what articles exist in CZ than you do at this time, I would be happy to go through the article and do a thorough job of wiki linking ... if you wish me to do so.

:Here is a link to a site that does a Google search of CZ:[http://www.google.com/custom?sa=Google+Search&domains=en.wikipedia.org&sitesearch=en.wikipedia.org Google sear4ch of CZ]. I use it often (with various key words) for finding CZ articles for wiki links and for use in "Related Articles" subpages. [[User:Milton Beychok|Milton Beychok]] 22:51, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

::Thanks, Milton, for your kind offer. Yes, I would be most grateful if you could bring in your expertise please. I'm thinking two articles could come from the material that I imported, and the first of these would be [[Renewable energy development]] in sandbox2 so perhaps you would care to start there. Thanks again... [[User:John Foster|John Foster]] 23:05, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

:::John, I will try to find time tomorrow to work on the article in your sandbox2. We have another very active CZ participant from Australia, and her name is [[User:Aleta Curry|Aleta Curry]]. You might want to get in touch with her. Regards, [[User:Milton Beychok|Milton Beychok]] 07:06, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

== Review and edits of [[Renewable energy development]] ==

I have completed about a 90% complete review (and resulting edits) of your article [[Renewable energy development]], much content of which seems to have been ported from WP. I will summarize my review/edits on the article's Talk page either later tonight or tomorrow. Regards, [[User:Milton Beychok|Milton Beychok]] 00:26, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

:Many thanks, Milton, for the effort you have put in. Much appreciated. There is now also a [[Renewable energy commercialization]] article ready to be reviewed if you have time. regards, [[User:John Foster|John Foster]] 03:56, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

::Please read the Talk page of [[Renewable energy development]] where I have entered my review comments and other guidance you will find to be useful (I hope). Other than those comments and guidance notes, I don't think that you need my help any longer. Regards, [[User:Milton Beychok|Milton Beychok]] 18:15, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

:::Milton, I was just starting to get into the routine of swapping some Talk page notes with you, and getting into the collaboration, but you have backed off. Please accept my apologies if I have have somehow offended. [[User:John Foster|John Foster]] 21:36, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

::::John, please don't feel that I backed off. I honestly think that you have done so remarkably well in just 3-4 days at learning the ropes here, that you don't need my help any longer. I will from time to time continue to review any of your articles where I believe that I have some expertise such as your articles about energy technologies. You absolutely have not offended me in any way. If you have some special problems with anything, please feel free to contact me. The CZ approach

John, welcome to CZ! I just made some changes (and comments on the Talk page) for Social movement. Returning to Citizendium: an update on the project and how to get involved

Hello - some time ago you became part of the Citizendium project, but we haven't seen you around for a while. Perhaps you'd like to update your public biography or check on the progress of any pages you've edited so far.

Citizendium now has over 16,000 articles, with more than 150 approved by specialist Editors such as yourself, but our contributor numbers require a boost. We have an initiative called 'Eduzendium' that brings in students enrolled on university courses to write articles for credit, but we still need more Editors across the community to write, discuss and approve material. There are some developed Geography and Physics articles that could be improved and approved, and some high-priority Natural and Social Sciences articles that we don't have yet. You can also create new articles via this guide, and contribute to some Geography or Physics pages that have been recently edited here and here - or to any others on Citizendium, since you're a general Author as well as a specialist Editor. You may like to contribute to discussions in the forums, and might consider running for an elected position on the Management and Editorial Councils that oversee the project.

If you have any questions, let me know via my Talk page or by leaving a message below this one. Thank you for signing up and reading this update; I hope that you will look in on our community soon. John Stephenson 08:11, 30 October 2011 (UTC)
