ABCs of Articles

Hi Eric, great to see you jumping into this new project BUT they are supposed to be *new* articles for the created ones, ie, ones that don't already exist, like Bucket drumming -- which I've been following as you write it. Very nice! Cheers! Hayford Peirce 03:43, 9 March 2011 (UTC)

A few suggestions, from Hayford

I think that we only use boldface for the initial mention of the name. Then, I think, we should use italics for any future mentions of specific games, just the way we do for book titles. And we don't use boldface at all, anywhere, except for that initial mention.... Hayford Peirce 02:47, 15 March 2011 (UTC)

Fair use

To answer your question: "fair use" requires a clear justification (which was possible in this case) but also clear knowledge of the copyright conditions. This means that we need to know the author, country, date and exactly what copyright attribution should be made -- because "fair use" is not a legal status, it is a claim that we ourselves are making as a derogation from US copyright law. It's not simple, and best avoided.

On the image you found, I realised by checking with the Qatar mission to the UN that the flag was not quite right (number of spikes and colour). But their image was not listed as public domain; rather than claim fair use, I found an alternative image from a flag website. So, the problem is now solved. It's best to look for PD images, which must be clearly labelled as such. Martin Baldwin-Edwards 08:26, 17 March 2011 (UTC)

PS: I hope my lecture on the use of images hasn't deterred you from writing on the wiki. If you have any doubts on these copyright issues, especially fair use, just ask. I am happy to assist. Thanks, Martin Baldwin-Edwards 22:07, 18 March 2011 (UTC)
