North Macedonia

The Republic of Macedonia (Macedonian: Република Македонија / Republika Makedonija), often referred to as Macedonia, is a landlocked country on the Balkan peninsula in southeastern Europe, bordered by Serbia to the north, Albania to the west, Greece to the south, and Bulgaria to the east.

It was admitted to the United Nations in 1993. The UN, some other international institutions and some countries use the provisional reference the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), pending resolution of a naming dispute with Greece, which has an adjoining province also called 'Macedonia' (Greek: Μακεδονία). The capital and the largest city of Macedonia is Skopje (Macedonian: Скопје) - which is the name Greeks use for the whole country. Ongoing negociations between the Republic of Macedonia, Greece and the United Nations try to find an agreement on a definitive, official name which would be recognized by all parts. The last proposal of 8 October 2008 suggests the name Republic of North Macedonia for foreign relations and the name Republic of Macedonia for internal use.
