Perhaps the first U.S. version of an assault rifle, the M2 carbine was a U.S. Army weapon, used in the Korean War and World War II, which fired intermediate-power .30 caliber cartridges. It was capable of full-automatic fire. It is a variant of the semiautomatic M1 carbine issued to personnel needing a lightweight weapon, rather than issued to most infantry soldiers.
