A fastening tool is used to attach fasteners either directly to a piece of work, or to other fasteners, in order to form parts of material into a whole. For example, a hammer can drive a nail through pieces of wood. A wrench can tighten a nut onto a threaded component such as a bolt.

Certain types of fastening operation may require the simultaneous use of more than one tool, such as a pair of wrenches for a bolt head and a nut.
