Germany, whether as principalities and duchies before the German Empire of 1871, of the Empire, the World Wars, the two post-WWII Germanies, and present reunification, has a long tradition of excellent German military forces. German theorists and commanders, such as Carl von Clausewitz, Helmut von Moltke the Elder, Helmut von Moltke the Younger, Heinz Guderian, and Erich von Manstein have contributed much to the military art.
