The continent of North America comprises the United States of America, Canada, Greenland, Mexico and the mainland region of Central America, itself comprising Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. With the exception of Trinidad and Tobago, a two-island state nearer Venezuela in South America, the Caribbean states and islands are also often regarded as part of North America. The continent covers 23.7 million km2 (9.2 million sq mi).
