Herman Van Rompuy (born in Etterbeek, Belgium, October 31 1947) is a Belgian/Flemish politician, member of a Christian-Democratic party (CD&V) and is of Roman Catholic faith. On 30 December 2008 he became prime minister of Belgium and on November 19, 2009 he was appointed as the first permanent chairman of the European Council. The European council is the highest political body of the European Union and its chairman is informally referred to as the "President of Europe".
