I was born 1955 in Middlesbrough in north-east England and went to school there. I trained as a teacher in Manchester. After moving back to Middlesbrough and working for two years as a teacher, I spent 1980-81 in what was then West Berlin, where my wife was doing a year’s teacher exchange. I spent the next five years back in north-east England teaching children for whom English was not their home language. After a short period as an advisory teacher, in 1988 I moved to what was then Bedford College of Higher Education as a lecturer in education. In 1993 I moved to north-west England and worked part-time for the next six years whilst completing a PhD. Most of this time I worked as a lecturer in education at St Martin’s College, Lancaster.
In 1999 I moved back to north-east England to live just outside Durham.
