Full Name: Philip Haley Troutman

Philip H. Troutman was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1959. After completing elementary and high school in Kansas City, in 1980 he earned an A.B. degree in Spanish and secondary education from Bethany Nazarene College (now Southern Nazarene University) in Bethany, Oklahoma. He then went on to complete in 1986 an M.Div. (Master of Divinity) degree at Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri.

After completing his theological training, Philip served as pastor of the Iglesia del Nazareno in Aurora, Illinois from April 1986 through Nov. 1987. He also taught high school Spanish at the Illinois Math and Science Academy during the fall 1987 semester. Then from Dec. 1987 through Jan. 1989 Philip served as pastor of the First Church of the Nazarene in Grand Saline, Texas. In August, 1988 he was ordained as an "elder" (preaching minister) on the Dallas District, Church of the Nazarene.

In Feb. 1989, Philip and Paula began 15 years of service as missionaries with the World Mission Division, Church of the Nazarene, serving first in the Republic of Cape Verde, then briefly in the Republic of Angola, and finally for eleven years in the Republic of Mozambique. Since July, 2004 Philip has been pursuing doctoral studies at Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky. He projects finishing his Ph.D. in Intercultural Studies by May, 2009. His dissertation will deal with: "Christianity and Islam: Factors in Interreligious Conversion in Eastern Africa in the 21st Century."

Besides English, Philip speaks three languages: Spanish, Portuguese, and ChiSena -- a tribal language of central Mozambique. He is also currently studying Arabic (MSA and Levantine dialect), and spent three weeks in Beirut, Lebanon in 2006. Philip's primary academic interests are cultural anthropology; Islam and Muslim cultures; Christian-Muslim relations; and living languages and translation studies. His hobbies include refurbishing old computers; science fiction books and movies; listening to jazz-fusion, classical and southern gospel music; and freshwater fishing (bass, blue-gill etc.).

Philip is married to Paula Ruth (nee Stroud), and they have two children -- Nathaniel Philip, born in 1984, and Christopher Paul, born in 1987 -- both of whom are currently in university. Philip and Paula live in Wilmore, Kentucky.
