Manie has spent the last 20 years conducting experiential research into ‘technologies of mind’ and ‘technologies of magic’ all over the world. He is committed to collapsing all existing teachings into one refined set of practical techniques and methodologies, and has written internationally acclaimed papers on subjects like shamanism and neurotheology. His early experiences of spirituality were as a practising Zen Buddhist. Insights and techniques from the Zen Buddhist tradition inform his practice to this day.

His first direct contact with magical worlds came through his membership as a fookian, engaged in Prof. Walter Battiss’ Fook Madgik Press, exploring alternative worlds and worldviews through media-art and performance. Manie was a member of Battiss’s research team to record ‘lost’ San Bushman art in the Drakensberg before erosion and ecotourism could intervene.

His explorations of altered states of consciousness flowed from encounters with an ayahuasceros, such as the Brazilian plant-teacher and shaman, Dr. Luis Eduardo Luna. He has researched and participated in many other western and eastern magical systems over the past 15 years and today follows his own path flavoured by Afro-Brazilian shamanism and East-West technologies of mind and magic.

During South Africa’s apartheid years, Manie was the business manager for the VryeWeekblad, South Africa’s only Afrikaans liberation newspaper. His commitment to personal development and to maintaining his own sanity is expressed through a healthy mix of magical, scientific and transhumanist worldviews.
