J. H. Underhill was educated at Amherst College and at The University of Michigan. He holds a Doctor of Education in English from the latter institution. Before he retired, he was Chair of the English Department for 33 years at Greenhills School, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He has a long-time interest in mentoring and professional development of English teachers and especially teachers of courses preparing students to take the Advanced Placement Exam in English Composition and Literature and the Advanced Placement Exam in English Composition and Language. He has developed a number of articles and outlines on major works of literature and on a variety of composition topics which may be of use to teachers of AP English and makes them available here on Citizendium.
