I began my university studies at University of California, Santa Cruz. This was where I first learned about computer software design, which would become my primary career. In Santa Cruz in 1980, my friend Michael Toy and I conceived of and created the computer game "Rogue", which is what I am best known for to this day. My career in software development included stints at several Silicon Valley start-ups, including Fortune Systems and Intuit. I had a hand in creating several pioneering and influential software products, including Microsoft Bookshelf, Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing and Quicken. I helped produce the first multimedia edition of Quicken. I was a principal designer of UpShot, which was one of the very first web-based applications. I have also been involved in the creation of quite a few computer games, both commercial and shareware, including Hunt for Red October, Life and Death, Toxic Ravine, Mombasa, and of course, Rogue. I am a published author whose work has appeared in both print (Sunworld magazine) and online (Roguelike magazine). Like everyone else, I am working on a novel.
