Dmitry Vaintrob was born in Moscow, Russia and grew up moving around various states in the US, until his parents and sister Lizka (now 10) settled down in Eugene, OR in 2000 (both are professors at the University of Oregon, his father Arkady in the math department, and mother Julia Nemirovskaya -- in the Russian department.)

He did Topology research at the Research Science Institute (RSI) in 2006 with MIT professor Pavel Etingof, and the research culminated in a characterization a certain topological invariant (the String Topology BV algebra) in terms of an algebraic invariant of the fundamental group for acyclic manifolds (i.e. manifolds having contractible universal cover.) (the paper can be found http://arxiv.org/abs/math/0702859.) In his senior year he participated in various science research competitions -- the International Science Fair (ISEF), the Intel Science Talent Search (STS) and the Siemens competition, using the paper on String Topology. Now he is a mathematics undergraduate at Harvard, graduating in 2011. His interests include Topology algebra, geometry and combinations thereof.
