David Hackett grew up in Indiana. He earned a bachelors’ degree in political science from the University of Oregon in 1982 and a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University in 1989. He began his career as a journalist in 1984 working for a weekly paper in Jackson, Wyo. From there he moved to Ogden, Utah to work for a daily newspaper where he stayed for a couple of years before leaving to earn his masters degree. From New York, he moved to Washington, D.C. where he worked as a congressional correspondent for four years before moving to Florida to join the editorial board of the St. Petersburg Times. He left the Times in 1998. In 1999 he launched his own business, which he sold in 2005. He categorizes himself today as an entrepreneur with an interest in citizen journalism.
