Brief overview: I study the ability of white blood cells to ingest and destroy foreign microbes, and the migration of white blood cells into tissues. These are vital functions in the context of immune control of infection, and we are studying the effects of HIV infection on these functions, to assess how HIV infection causes immunodeficiency and thus how immunodeficiency may be better treated.

Qualifications: B.Sc. (Hons), Monash University, Melbourne, Australia, majoring in microbiology and immunology PhD candidate, Burnet Institute, Melbourne, Australia

Synopsis of research projects undertaken: Phagocytosis and transendothelial migration by monocytes and macrophages in the context of HIV infection.

Specialty fields: Cell biology (cell migration and phagocytosis), Biochemistry (kinase signalling pathways), Microbiology (HIV) and Immunology (both generally, and with specific expertise on monocyte/macrophages).
