Lodge in 1960

Lodge didn't run for the presidential nomination in 1960, did he? I thought he was the picked for Vice-president after Nixon won the nomination, but hadn't been involved in the contest up to that point -- unlike the Democratic VP nominee. Bruce M.Tindall 17:16, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

That was from his U.S. Senate biography, but I'll check farther. I only have vague personal recollections of the 1960 election. With no research on the subject, I would be surprised if he and Nixon didn't have intensely clashing personalities. Howard C. Berkowitz 19:23, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

Here are the relevant years from the bio I found via the Senate web site, http://bioguide.congress.gov/scripts/biodisplay.pl?index=L000394 : "United States representative to the United Nations from February 1953 until his resignation September 3, 1960; unsuccessful Republican nominee for Vice President of the United States in 1960; Ambassador to Republic of Vietnam 1963-1964." Nothing there about a presidential bid. Various other sources, which also don't mention a presidential bid, suggest that Nixon picked him for VP both to put some foreign-policy expertise on the ticket, and to try to drain some Massachusetts support away from Kennedy.
