Diacritics
That's interesting about Wikipedian diacritics warring. Does it only concern Vietnamese? Ro Thorpe 18:42, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
- The focus of the diacritics dispute was on article titles for tennis and hockey players from Eastern Europe. I wrote only a few posts on that subject, but that was enough to attract the attention of trolls. When Jenks24 unblocked me, there was a wave of indignation that lasted for weeks. The Vietnam project had been my little pond up to that point, but soon afterward pro-diacritics editors began to take an interest. So "Han-Nom" is very much off the beaten track as far as controversial subject matter goes. It's just what I happened to be working on at the time the knives came out for me. My banning triggered a chain reaction with hundreds of articles moving, both Vietnamese and otherwise. Peter Kauffner 21:42, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
- The WP article on the Pali Canon was renamed Pāli Canon some time ago. I think if you check English dictionaries you'll find only the unpointed form listed for the name of the language, which suggests it's likely to be the usual form for the Canon too. Peter Jackson 11:41, 14 November 2013 (UTC)
- Well, that was one of the major accusations against me: That I linked to dictionaries to support my case. For the pro-diacritic editors, it's all about multinational flag waving. Whatever policy they want to adopt, it's vindictive to block and ban editors simply for being on the losing side. Peter Kauffner 15:21, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

- It's spelled "Pali", according to Britannica, Merriam-Webster, Oxford, and several other dictionaries. No major dictionary gives this word with a diacritic, not even as a variant. See, I can build these kind of cases in my sleep. It’s what makes me too dangerous for Wikipedia. Peter Kauffner 07:37, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
