Born at the seaside in De Panne, Belgium, in 1923, studied chemistry at the state University of Gent , Belgium. and obtained a PhD degree in 1949.
Was assistant, head assistant, lecturer and then Professor at the Laboratory of Organic Chemistry of the University in Gent.
Was Director of that laboratory from 1965 to 1988.
Gave a course on General Organic Chemistry to students in the
sections Chemistry, Pharmacy, Biology and Medicine.
Research interests were in the field of natural products (Hop and
Beer Bitter Acids) and in the field of Chromatography. This resulted
in over 400 papers in specialized journals.
Maurits Verzele guided and promoted 100 chemistry students to obtain
a PhD degree.
He attended and lectured at a very large number of symposia all over the world. He also wrote several non-chemistry books, fiction and non-fiction.
Dr. Verzele has passed on and the Citizendium honors his memory.
