In December 2011, Noam Chomsky delivered a lecture on the history of linguistics in the twentieth century, with particular reference to MIT on the occasion of the Linguistics Department's 50th anniversary. Chomsky is arguably the most significant figure in modern linguistics due to his theories about generative grammar, language acquisition, syntax and, most recently, language evolution.
