GEN James Conway, Commandant of the United States Marine Corps

General James T. Conway is the 34th Commandant of the United States Marine Corps. Prior to his present post, he was Director of Operations (J-3) for the Joint Staff under the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, after commanding I Marine Expedititionary Force (I MEF) and the Marine Corps University.

He assumed command of the 1st Marine Division. In November 2002, Major General Conway was promoted to Lieutenant General and assumed command of the I Marine Expeditionary Force. He commanded I MEF in the Gulf War.

A 1973 graduate of Southeast Missouri State University, his senior responsibilities included command of Battalion Landing Team 3/2 during Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm.
