The Software Engineering Institute (SEI) was founded in 1984 by the Carnegie Mellon University (of which it is part). It serves in the United States as a federally funded research and development center.

The SEI's aims are to advance software engineering principles and practices, serving as a national resource in software engineering, computer security, and process improvement. The SEI works closely with defense and government organizations, industry, and academia to improve software-intensive systems. [1]
