Nebraska became the 37th state to join the United States of America on March 1, 1867 when President Andrew Johnson signed its statehood bill. Nebraska became a U.S. Territory in 1854 and the seat of the territorial government was in Omaha. With statehood came a new capitol. The tiny village of Lancaster was renamed Lincoln after the recently assasinated president and made the new capitol.
