Mogadishu is the largest city, largest port, and official capital of Somalia, in East Africa. Its security is sufficiently poor to make it dysfynctional as a city. The situation involves more than street crime; there is active fighting. [1] It has been abandoned by half or more of its roughly 1 million residents. [2]

Current situation

According to the UN High Commissioner on Refugees, the last round of fighting started on May 8. At least 20,000 residents have been displaced; see Mogadishu/External Links for a map.
