Hans Holbein the younger (1497/8–1543) was a Bavarian artist who has been described as "the first great British artist".[1]

He was tutored in the studio of his father, Hans Holbein the elder, in Augsburg. At the age of twenty-nine he moved to England for two years, where he met and painted Thomas More.
