Formerly Lai Chau City, Dien Bien Phu City is the capital of Lai Chau Province of [Vietnam]], which is also called Dien Bien Province. The name was changed by legislation on 26 September 2003. At the time of its creation, the city had an area of 6,009.05 hectares and a population of 70,639.[1]
Battle areas
The Battle of Dien Bien Phu took place nearby. Viet Minh headquarters was 25 km east of Dien Bien Phu City.[2]
Festivals
The area has a number of historic festivals long before the Indochinese Revolution, which take place in the third lunar month. [3] Dating to the Hoang Dynasty, another area of cultural significance is the Ban Phu Citadel in Noong Het village, Dien Bien district, about 9 km from the West of Dien Bien Phu city.
Hoang Cong Chat temple was built in the centre of the Ban Phu citedal (Chieng Le citedal) to worship the Hoang descent line and 6 leaders of the army of Hoang Cong Chat, a farmer hero, born in Thai Binh province, in an insurgency (1739-69) to protect Muong Thanh (Muong Then) from occupation, by the Phe forces the increasing breakdown of the Tay Son Dynasty. The temple remains a place of the worship for the local people day of the full moon of the new lunar year.[2]
