Arlen Specter is a United States Senator from Pennsylvania. First elected as a Republican in 1980, he changed his party affiliation to Democratic in 2009, but lost the 2010 Democratic nomination to Representative Joe Sestak.

As a longtime member and sometimes chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Specter had a leading role in the confirmation hearings for several Supreme Court nominees. His questioning of the witness Anita Hill in the hearings on Clarence Thomas's nomination was particularly controversial.
