Age of Empires (often abbreviated to AoE) is a history-based real-time strategy video game released in 1997. Developed by Ensemble Studios and published by Microsoft, the game uses the Genie Game Engine, a 2D sprite based game engine. In the game user acts as an ancient civilization leader. He has ability to construct buildings, make units, gather resources and advance through four ages: stone age, tool age, bronze age and iron age.

The game received generally good reviews, and an expansion pack Age of Empires: The Rise of Rome was released in 1998. Both the original Age of Empires and the expansion pack were later released as "Gold Edition".

Age of Empires has four single-player campaigns, where user have to complete specific missions. There are also random map mode and ability to play online.
