The English Premiership is a professional Football league which consists of twenty English teams. Formed in 1992 by the top tier of English clubs as a breakway of the traditional Football League first division, the Premiership has seen sixteen full seasons in total, and is currently starting its seventeenth.

Origins

The decision to break away from the original Football League was made so as to increase TV revenues for the clubs at the expense of the League. As the game has become more commercial (a movement which took pace in the early 1990s, but moved rapidly in the 21st century) the issue of TV rights and subsequent income has become an important issue for clubs and a major source of finance for all involved.
