Maximillian I Joseph ruled Bavaria first as Elector Max IV Joseph of Bavaria in the Holy Roman Empire, and after it's dissolvement in 1806, as the first King of Bavaria. He was the father of King Ludwig I of Bavaria, and his daughter Augusta Amalia married Napolean's stepson Eugene de Beauharnais. Bavaria became a kingdom on New Years Day, 1806, by the decree of Napolean.
