Dowman P. Varn received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Tennessee in 2001 for work done in the crystallography of disordered, layered solids. While a graduate student and later a post-doctoral researcher at the Santa Fe Institute, he and collaborators Jim Crutchfield and Geoff Canright developed a method to quantify the stacking disorder of layered solids from their x-ray diffraction spectra and demonstrated its use on experimental zinc sulphide diffractograms. Dr. Varn's interest include complexity science, anthropogenic climate change, physics education and the history of science.
