Richard Bernstein, a journalist, writes the "Letter from America" column in the International Herald Tribune]]. He was daily book critic for the New York Times]] (1995-2002), as well as United Nations]] and Paris bureau]] chiefs, and national cultural correspondent. He was Time (magazine)|Time]]'s first Beijing]] bureau chief. After receiving his undergraduate degree from the University of Connecticut, summa cum laude in 1966, he studied History and East Asian Languages at Harvard University]] receiving a master's degree in Chinese Setudies, becoming a part-time writer for the Washington Post]] while on fieldwork in Asia.
