Vlieland is one of the Frisian Islands. It is also one of the municipalities of the Dutch province of Friesland. Vlieland lies between the islands Texel and Terschelling, and has the Wadden Sea to its south and the North Sea to its north.
There is only one settlement on the island, called Oost-Vlieland. As of June 2007, there are 1142 inhabitants.
The harbor of Oost-Vlieland is served by ferries to and from the town of Harlingen on mainland of Friesland and the Terschelling island. The ships are operated by the Doeksen company. There is one bus route on the island, that connects Oost-Vlieland and the camping areas. This service is provided by TCR Vlieland company.
Vlieland is a popular tourist destination with the length of its sand beaches being 20 km. There are two camping areas, about fifteen hotels and many rooms and cottages for hire. Tourists are not allowed to bring their car—bicycles are the main means of transportation.
