The Wii U is a home video game console released in 2012 by Japanese video game company Nintendo. It is the successor to the Wii, with the main addition being the Wii U Gamepad, which has a touchscreen, camera, and other buttons for control. The Gamepad's second touch-compatible screen allowed many Wii U games to involve different control schemes when compared to the Wii, such as allowing a player to see a different view on the Gamepad and television. It could also be used as a regular controlled in many games; Wii U games could also be controlled with Wii remotes, similarly to the Wii. It also has backwards compatibility with Wii games, and its games are on the same type of disks.
The Wii U introduced the use of Amiibo, figurines and cards based on Nintendo characters that can be scanned using an NFC scanner on the Wii U Gamepad for cosmetics or in-game activities relating to the character.
In the Wii U's lifespan, it sold 13.56 million units. This is the lowest units sold of any home console sold by Nintendo. [1] Because of this, the Wii U is often considered to be a failure. The Wii U was discontinued in 2017, and all online services will be shut down by Nintendo in April 2024 [2]
