Structural foundations

  • Developing Article foundation (structure): A structure that transfers building loads to the ground. [e]
  • External Article Deep foundation: Foundation distinguished from shallow foundations by the depth they are embedded into the ground, for very large design loads, a poor soil at shallow depth, or site constraints. [e]
  • Developing Article Shallow foundation: Type of foundation which transfers building loads to the earth very near the surface, rather than to a subsurface layer or a range of depths as does a deep foundation. [e]

Organizational foundations

  • Stub Charitable foundation: An organisation with its own source of funding, set up to make grants to other organisations with charitable purposes, or to individuals who may qualify for charitable grants. [e]
  • Community foundation: A type of foundation first created in the 1920s in Cleveland and consisting of individual funds dedicated to specific purposes (like supporting nonprofit organizations, community resources, scholarships, etc.) and general funds available for distribution by the foundation's governing board.   • Family foundation: A foundation created and controlled by members of a family, and often named for the family. (E.g., the Ford Foundation; the Rockefeller Foundation; the Mandel Foundation, et. al.) [e]
  • Company foundation: A foundation created by a business corporation out of company earnings or profits. (Tax law often allows corporations to donate a limited amount for such purposes). Distinct from a family foundation created by members of a family-owned business out of their own personal wealth. [e]
