35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Primates; Family: Cercopithecidae; Genus: Macaca; Genus species: Macaca fuscata. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 47-60 cm; Weight: 8-18 kg; Identification: The long fur of the Japanese macaque ranges from brown to white in coloration. Its facial skin is naked and bright red. The macaque also has a relatively short tail; Habitat: Forested hills, highlands, mountains; Diet: Omnivore: fruit, leaves, berries, seeds, small animals, insects, bark; Reproduction: A single offspring is the product of a 165-180 day gestation; Social Structure: The most common social structure is a mixed group with 20-30 members; Behavior: Females remain in their original group while males disperse and join other groups. Japanese macaques can be found in the trees, on the ground, or in thermal pools; Status: Endangered; Interesting Facts: Other than man, this is the only primate that can withstand freezing weather. It is also the only monkey found in Japan.
