This is the top-level article for numerous articles about the many wars of modern Iraq. See Iran-Iraq War for the 1980-1988 conflict, Gulf War for the 1990-1991 hostilities associated with the invasion of Kuwait, and Iraq War for things since the 2003 invasion. Also see Iraq, Iran and Middle East for more geographic coverage.

For practical purposes, Iraq is a modern concept, created from former Ottoman Empire provinces by the British colonial administration. While there have been historical conflicts in these areas, they were not conflicts that mapped cleanly to the modern Iraq. In the 20th and 21st century, there have been several major wars, each with a major top-level article.
