Arabic

Hey Steven-- There was a discussion going on at the moment at the Talk page for Usama bin Laden. We were trying to figure out the proper way to transliterate his name. Have you done any work with MSA or the Arabic dialects? Thanks, Brian P. Long 15:47, 4 May 2008 (CDT)

Collaboration

I'm never sure whether to put replies on your page or mine -- I rather like to have them in one place. My detailed response was on my page, but, basically, let's talk.

Your plans of study are interesting -- the daughter of a friend is going into her senior year of high school, but is very interested in studying Arabic. She's less interested in the culture, which may turn out to be a problem -- although she's also interested in a computer science major, and possibly working on natural language recognition.

OK. Right now, there's some material on Syria in the CIA activities in the Middle East and South Asia article. As I remember, there isn't so much there that I wanted to break out the Syrian article from the regional level.

I can contribute some of the more specific warfare details with Israel. There's some general material in air warfare planning and suppression of enemy air defense, but perhaps I can put together an article linking the major strike, some years ago, in which the Israelis originated the use of drones to draw radar so that it could be attacked. There's a brief discussion, in Schwarzkopf's book, about the political compromises to keep Syria in the 1991 coalition (most of my library is in storage, but I have that one here). It's a good question as to whether there is enough material to discuss either WMD proliferation, or the mystery Israeli attack on the alleged North Korean provided nuclear facility.
