Playing for West Germany from 1966 to 1974, Müller scored 68 goals in 62 appearances. This was a record for Germany (i.e., Bundesrepublik Deutschland; the BRD) until his total was overtaken by Miroslav Klose in 2014. Müller scored the winning goal for West Germany when they defeated the Netherlands 2–1 in the 1974 World Cup Final.
