Yen Bai Province' was created, in 1992, from the former Hoang Lien Son province. On the north, it has Ha Giang Province, which borders China. Its southern neighbor is Son La Province, with Tuyen Quang Province to its northeast and by Phu Tho Province on its southeast. Lao Cai Province, on the northwest, was also part of Hoang Lien Son province.
