I was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland in 1974. As a teenager, I was heavily involved in martial arts training and in the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, where I received my Private Pilot License on a scholarship in 1992.
In 1995 I received my Commercial Pilot license and Class 4 Flight Instructor Rating. This lead to my first career as a flight instructor, in which I remained full time for 4 years (and part time for another 4). In that time, I accumulated over 2000 hours of flight time, obtained a Class 1 Flight Instructor Rating (which qualifies me to train Commercial Pilots to become junior Flight Instructors), and received Pilot Examiner authority from Transport Canada.
In 1999, I returned to school to study Mechanical Engineering, spending two years at Saint Mary’s University for a general Engineering Diploma, and a further two years at Dalhousie University for a Bachelor of Engineering degree. While studying, I operated my own company, through which I conducted contract flight training and flight testing. I also published my first book, ‘Applied Aerodynamics for Private and Commercial Pilots’, through this company in 2000.
Through my company, I entered into several smaller training contracts, including online course development, training consulting, and flight testing for the licensing of pilots.
I completed my Engineering degree in 2003, and after two brief flight training contracts and a brief engineering contract, I took a 3 year contract with the College of the North Atlantic in Qatar. There, I taught college level Mechanical Engineering Technology.
Since my teaching contract in Qatar ended, I’ve been busy with two partners starting an engineering consulting and design firm in Qatar.
My main interests are aviation/aerospace, alternative energy, martial arts, teaching, writing, and traveling. As of mid-2007, I’ve visited: United Kingdom, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Lebanon, India, France, Maldives, and The Netherlands (oh, and of course, Canada!). I have one book published, with a second edition in the works and a second book (‘The Tao of Teaching’) well under way.
My full formal qualifications include: Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical), Airline Transport Pilot License, Class 1 Flight Instructor Rating, and (former) Pilot Examiner (7 years experience).
