Reading the medical literature about cheek implants, chin implants, and breast implants brings one directly into the history of silicone for these uses. Hopefully, this article will eventually be complete enough to stand on its own. At the moment there is a natural tie-in to cosmetic and plastic surgery. Nancy Sculerati MD 14:07, 3 March 2007 (CST)

Hollow cheeks can be filled, skin creases smoothed, lips may be made more full and sensual, clefts in chins removed, and breasts enlarged. Hips and thighs can be “sculpted” to create the appearance of a voluptuous woman. Male-hyped athletic features may also be “sculpted” by creating instant massive pectoral, back, or calf muscles. However, those short-term benefits are greatly outbalanced by numerous and serious complications, including “melting” or “shifting” of the silicone primary site with migration to secondary sites, discoloration and inflammation of adjacent areas, lipodystrophy, nodular granulomas, cystic lesions and ulcerations, disfiguring scarring, respiratory problems, and potentially fatal silicone embolism. We report such a fatal silicone embolism in a heterosexual female."
