Archived version /Archive 1 -- formerly "List of of the Presidents of the United States".

Is this really the best name for the article? Abbreviation aside wouldn't it at least be better to have "List of" or "Former" in the title seeing as how that's what the article is... --Rob Glass 15:53, 26 May 2007 (CDT)

Since we list George W. Bush, "former" would be inappropriate. "List" would be better. Though there's a tendency to get away from the word "list" here, I think it works better than would "catalog". Actually, I'd most prefer "List of Presidents of the United States of America", as I dislike abbreviations in titles. Anthony Argyriou 15:09, 19 June 2007 (CDT)

High priority

This is a high priority Google search item. --Larry Sanger 16:50, 11 October 2007 (CDT)

What changes do you suggest? Obviously, we should wrte articles for the redlinked Presidents, and we perhaps should have a separate President of the United States of America article to explain about the office and its history, with a section heading which links to this list. However, is there more which could be added to the list proper? We could add data like Electoral College majorities, popular votes, opponents, party identification, date of birth, state of residence when elected, etc.. Too many of those items would make the list unweildy. Anthony Argyriou 19:07, 11 October 2007 (CDT)

I don't have any particular changes to suggest, I just looked at a list of most CZ-traffic-generating search terms given to me by Google, and this was, in fact, at the very top of the list! --Larry Sanger 19:24, 11 October 2007 (CDT)

Is there a link to that? Also, I wasn't aware that we are relying upon google now? --Robert W King 19:39, 11 October 2007 (CDT)

We aren't relying on Google, the world is--and we would do well to keep the world's (and so Google's) interests in mind. I'll post a longer list if I get the time...it's something available only to me, as owner of citizendium.org (I don't know why). --Larry Sanger 19:48, 11 October 2007 (CDT)

Is there data on what people search for within Citizendium? Once they're here, what do people look for? (And what redlinks are most clicked?) Anthony Argyriou 12:16, 12 October 2007 (CDT)
we have articles on all the main presidents except Ulysses Grant, and I plan to work on that someday. (I did a lot of work on the Wikipedia Grant article). Richard Jensen 17:17, 20 October 2007 (CDT)
Monroe (and his doctrine) and the notorious Daddy Bush were not covered yet. Yi Zhe Wu 17:19, 20 October 2007 (CDT)

Subpage?

Now that the subpagination bot has been through, it's appropriate to ask if this article should become a subpage of President of the United States of America. It seems like a natural use of subpages - to list the holders of the office in an article about the office. Anthony Argyriou 12:31, 5 November 2007 (CST)

yes, good ideaRichard Jensen 12:37, 5 November 2007 (CST)
So what would we do.. move it to Presidents of the United States/Catalogs/List of U.S. Presidents? --Matt Innis (Talk) 14:06, 5 November 2007 (CST)
why not just Presidents of the United States/List of U.S. Presidents and drop the catalog step Richard Jensen 14:17, 5 November 2007 (CST)
Okay, I'll try that. --Matt Innis (Talk) 14:22, 5 November 2007 (CST)

I hate to say it but...well, it's up to you...but "Presidents of the United States" is in plural form. Won't we have an article titled United States President or President of the United States of America, or history of the U.S. presidency, or United States presidency? The list would be better placed as a subpage of one of those, I think.

Also, I'm afraid that technically you can't drop the "Catalogs" bit.

Actually, what we ought to do is allow people to use either "Catalog" or "Catalogs." If we used the single form, then President of the United States/Catalog might be the best home for it. Until we allow the singular form, [[President of the United States/Catalogs might be best. --Larry Sanger 14:29, 5 November 2007 (CST)

Also, don't forget these guys! LOL --Larry Sanger 14:34, 5 November 2007 (CST)

LOL, some people need a day job! --Matt Innis (Talk) 14:51, 5 November 2007 (CST)
we only need one article to deal with the US presidency...what we title it does not matter much to me. Richard Jensen 14:35, 5 November 2007 (CST)

Okay, I'll move it to President of the United States/Catalogs. If I haven't messed it all up already! --Matt Innis (Talk) 14:38, 5 November 2007 (CST)

Well, it ended up at President of the United States of America/Catalogs. That was the only one that the subpage template worked properly. --Matt Innis (Talk) 14:49, 5 November 2007 (CST)

Parties

This can be a problem before recent times, i.e. before parties got rigidly organized. I read somewhere that Lincoln/Johnson stood on a "Union" ticket. Similar problems over here. Peter Jackson (talk) 04:49, 28 October 2022 (CDT)

I agree. Maybe it's useful for recent decades, if for nothing else, to illustrate for younger folks the point that the party in power tends to alternate regularly. I think some of the party affiliations more than 80 years ago will need footnotes, or should perhaps just be left out. But unless I misremember, Lincoln's party was called "Republican" at least before the war broke out. But ironically, the values of the party toggled almost completely over the following century, with the Republicans going from being the party in favor of abolition of slavery to the party most likely to protect some of the racist status quo such as segregation. So Republican then meant sometime quite different than it does now.

And conversely the Democrats used to be the party of slavery, white supremacy and segregation, now they're the party of civil rights. Peter Jackson (talk) 05:04, 29 October 2022 (CDT)
