Talk:Don't Worry, Be Happy/Definition

Years ago, when I lived in San Francisco, there was an item in the Herb Caen column one day (he was a unique and very famous S.F. institution for 40 or 50 years) that the day before on the freeway leading into the City from the south Bobby's car broke down and he managed to get it pulled over into one of the rare turnoff spaces on that lousy freeway. (I knew the precise spot, used to go by it often.) As he stood there outside his car, hoping that someone would stop and help him (the days before cellphones, remember!), Caen says that hundreds and hundreds of people drove past him, slowed down, and every one of them yelled at him, "Don't worry, be happy!" Poor guy.... (I never heard the song, thank goodness, I'll take your word for it that it was stupid and dumb.) Hayford Peirce 23:53, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

Oh, you're kidding, Hayford! Arrrrgh!
Bobby McFerrin is an outstanding musician, and one of my favourites. He's got a wonderful way of engaging people. (Have a look at the video.) An American treasure.
I was just saying to my husband the other day that it was incredible that given McFerrin's body of work, he's going to be best remembered for that irritatingly catchy tune! (How on earth have you managed to avoid having heard it?!)

Like the punchline of the old joke about the guy who asks the incredibly well-educated and accomplished hooker what's she's doing in such a lousy business, "Just lucky, I guess." Hayford Peirce 03:31, 8 January 2011 (UTC)
