Schloss Herrenchiemsee (Herrenchiemsee Palace) is a rococo style palace in Bavaria. The palace was commissioned by King Ludwig II and intended to be a Bavarian version of Versailles, where Ludwig could live out his dream of absolute monarchy on a private island. The palace is located on Herreninsel (The Men's Island), the largest island in Chiemsee (Lake Chiemsee), which was purchased by Ludwig in 1873. Construction began on the palace in 1878, and was not completed before the kings's death in 1886. King Ludwig is known to have spent a total of 10 nights in residence at the unfinished palace. The palace is now a tourist destination and home of the King Ludwig II museum.
