Pope John II
From Citizendium, the Citizens' Compendium
Pope John II (533-535) was a sixth-century pope. He is particularly noteworthy because he is the first pope to take a regnal name instead of his given name. In the case of John II, he chose to take a regnal name because his given name, Mercurius, was the name of a pagan god.
