Direct support (DS) is a mission assigned to a military unit that another specific unit, and authorizing it to answer directly to the supported force’s request for assistance. The nature of the support may be combat arms, as in artillery; combat support, as in communications; or combat service support, as in supply or transportation.

Units may be organized specifically to provided DS, as opposed to general support (GS). A DS combat engineer company, for example, might use armored vehicles that can keep up with a supported unit on the battlefield, while a GS unit might ride in trucks.
