Dien Bien Phu City

Formerly Lai Chau City, Dien Bien Phu City is the capital of Lai Chau Province of Vietnam, which is also called Dien Bien Province. The name was changed by legislation on 26 September 2003. At the time of its creation, the city had an area of 6,009.05 hectares and a population of 70,639.
The city contains Muong Thanh airport, once important to the battle and now a regional civil airport.
Dating to the Tay Son Dynasty, another area of cultural significance is the Ban Phu Citadel in Noong Het village, Dien Bien district, about 9 km from the West of Dien Bien Phu city. The Hoang Cong Chat temple was built in the center of the Ban Phu citadel (Chieng Le citadel) to worship the Hoang family and 6 leaders of the army of Hoang Cong Chat, a farmer hero, born in Thai Binh province, in an insurgency (1739-69) to protect Muong Thanh (Muong Then) from occupation, by the Phe forces the increasing breakdown of the Tay Son Dynasty. The temple remains a place of the worship for the local people day of the full moon of the new lunar year.
