Enacted in 1850 between the U.S.A. and Great Britain, the Clayton-Bulwer Treaty provided that Great Britain renounced any further aim to colonize any territory in the Western Hemisphere. Both the US and Britain further agreed that any canal built in Central America would be built and fortified only by mutual consent.

This treaty was rescinded by the Hay-Pauncefote Treaty, 1901.
